I spent two weeks in Rishikesh in March 2026, splitting my time between river rafting and yoga ashrams. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.
Why Rishikesh?
Rishikesh is the yoga capital of the world, but it’s also India’s best destination for white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and camping. The Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan is a spiritual experience you won’t forget.
How to Reach
- By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (25 km). Taxi to Rishikesh: ₹800–₹1,200.
- By Train: Haridwar Junction (25 km). Shared auto: ₹50.
- By Bus: Regular buses from Delhi (6–7 hours).
Best Time to Visit
- September to November: Best for rafting and pleasant weather.
- February to May: Good for yoga and sightseeing.
- July to August: Monsoon — rafting closed due to high water levels.
Top Things to Do
- White-Water Rafting
Grade III–IV rapids from Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km). Cost: ₹600–₹1,200 per person. Book with licensed operators only. - Bungee Jumping
Jumpin Heights — 83 metres. Cost: ₹3,500. Book in advance. - Yoga & Meditation
Drop-in classes at Parmarth Niketan (free/donation). For 7-day courses, try Sivananda Ashram. - Ganga Aarti
Every evening at 6 PM at Parmarth Niketan. Arrive by 5:30 PM for a good spot. - Camping
Riverside camps at Shivpuri. Cost: ₹1,500–₹3,000 per night with meals.
Where to Stay
- Budget: Zostel Rishikesh (₹500–₹800/dorm).
- Mid-Range: Divine Resort (₹3,000–₹5,000).
- Luxury: Ananda in the Himalayas (₹25,000+).
Food
Rishikesh is pure vegetarian and alcohol-free. Try:
- Chotiwala Restaurant — iconic thali.
- Little Buddha Café — river view.
- The Beatles Ashram — for the vibe.
Safety Tips
- Always wear a life jacket during rafting.
- Don’t swim in the Ganga — currents are strong.
- Respect local culture: no alcohol, no non-veg near temples.
